I’m a huge fan of peppermint lip balm. I am especially fond of that fresh, tingly feeling you get from using true peppermint oil. Yum.
But when Burt’s Bees got bought out by a bigger company and changed their formula, I knew I had to make my own. And guess what?
I made it BETTER. No joke.
I love it! And my friends love it, too!
My peppermint lip balm is fresh, hydrating, has that distinctive peppermint tingle, and leaves your lips supple and shining!
The ingredients are so good you could eat them! (And one of my friend’s son actually has eaten TWO TUBES of my lip balm, so I have to keep giving her more!)
Best of all, it’s good for you, it costs less than a dollar to make each one—including the tube—and if you have extra ingredients on hand, you can use them to make my homemade deodorant or homemade body butter!
Peppermint Lip Balm Recipe (Makes 12)
Melt shea butter, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, and beeswax in a double boiler on the lowest heat possible. Remove from heat and then add peppermint oil. Pour into tubes and let sit with caps off for 24 hours. Cap and enjoy!
Hi, making these now! Question – do I have to keep them in fridge? I want to give them out to family who are taking long flights home. Thanks!
Nope! They don’t need to be refrigerated ever.
I am excited to try this recipe! Do you think I could substitute vitamin E oil for the sweet almond oil? I currently have all of the other ingredients except for the almond oil.
Thanks!
Do you really need to wait 24 hrs. Before you cap the tubes, or can they be caped as soon as they cool.
Using a glass dropper to fill the tubes, how can you do that without the wax hardening in the droper? I think,it’s a great idea, and would be easy for the kids to fill, but it didn’t work for me. Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Barbara
You can cap them earlier, as long as they are no longer warm. I would not use a dropper to fill them. It takes some skill, but I pour straight from the pan. Or you can buy a lip balm filling tray: http://www.sks-bottle.com/340c/fin77c.html
Another, easier way to to add the mixture to the tubes is by using a small funnel
Just wanted to say I bought every linked ingredient and this worked out perfectly. (Did it last night.)
However the mintyness is far weaker/more subtle than Burt’s. (To the point if being barely detectable.)
Do you think the recipe will still
“harden” with double the Peppermint oil?
Add more oil if you want! It will still harden :)
Hello I would like to ask you, how much TBSP is in grams? Cause I am not sure what is the tbsp exactly :D… or how much :) Could you give quantity in grams please? Thank you :)
A TBSP is roughly 15g? But honestly if you have big spoons and little spoons in your kitchen drawer, I use a big spoon for a Tablespoon (TBSP) and a small spoon for a teaspoon (tsp).
This might be a silly question but do you wash the tubes first or boil or sanitize them in any way? Thanks!
Nope. I use them just the way they come. :)
Is it ok if I sell the lip balm I make if I give you credit for the recipe. Granted I changed it a little bit.
Yes! Of course. :)
Is peppermint extract ok or do I have to us peppermint oil. And can I do half olive oil and half almond oil?
Peppermint oil. And yes, you could split the other oils. I buy my peppermint oil here: http://bit.ly/YN9vlk
Hi,
I’m looking to make lip balm, would this work in a little glass round jar? I don’t like the tubs. I prefer to use my finger as the applicator.
Will this recipe still work?
Thank you for sharing
Yes! I personally use mine from a little 1oz glass container. :)
I need to know if you have to use unrefined Shea butter, or if it’s ok to use refined? Thanks in advance.
I’d say Unrefined is a requirement. When making your own cosmetics and skin care, it’s always best to use the most pure and natural base products as possible. The problem with refined product is that this “refinement” is usually done via a chemical process. This not only eliminates some of the healing properties of the oil/butter, but chemical residues are always left behind. Using base products with synthetic chemical residues, and lost nutrients, kind of defeats the purpose of making your own products. So spend the extra couple of dollars. It’s worth it!
