Silicone sadly splits - otherwise, a perfect five spatula
6/14/16 UPDATE. I just upgraded my review from 2 to 3 stars (would give it 3-1/2 if I could). Having tried other spatulas hoping they would replace this one, I simply haven't found any that are nearly as useful from a shape and design perspective. This one fits into just about every jar with ease, and works just as well in mixing bowls. It strikes the perfect balance between flexibility and sturdiness (apart from the splitting issue). I will give the iSi another try and will just be more careful with it. Also, I contacted iSi after my third one failed with the same splitting issue, and they sent me replacements right away (though they didn't answer my inquiry re: why this was happening and whether there were any fixes, either by the user or in their design). So, with the belief that part of a product's value lies in the service attached to it, I did want to ensure my review reflected the responsive service. I know this is a lot of information, especially for just a spatula! But while not spendy, spatulas are a daily necessity for me and I'm assuming for others, and worth the bother to ensure that one gets an efficient and reliable one that doesn't need to be replaced every few uses. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I've been a big iSi fan, and in fact recently raved in another review about the iSi North America B10002 Silicone Scraper Spatula, White, of which I have two. I also own two of these spatulas, one in red and one in white, along with a set of iSi mixing bowls and a set of iSi prep bowls. I was a big fan of these spatulas in particular, given their narrow shape, sturdy feel, vibrant colors, and seemingly high quality silicone. Unfortunately, having now used these spatulas less than a dozen times each, they have both split at the edge (see accompanying photos). I've just used them for standard tasks, including scraping out mixing bowls and jars, and have not treated them roughly in any manner. I have not cooked with them, and almost always hand wash. When the red one first split, I thought it was a random one-time occurence, and took out the white one to use. But a few days later, I noticed the same thing had happened to the white one, which I'd just used 4-5 times. The spatula would be five stars were it not for the durability issue. Unfortunately, I can only give it two stars - bad economics and questionable health impact. I'm not sure where the eroded silicone ended up, but I won't risk it in the future. Not recommended, until/unless iSi comes up with a more reliable silicone. FYI, the same thing happened to the iSi Silicone Scraper Spatula I linked to above.

This is a review of the ISI Basics Slim Spatula.

I was primarily looking for a slim spatula to use with my Vitamix. I really wanted to get to the bottom of which spatula is the best... the Vitamix Spatula, Set of 3, the OXO Good Grips Jar Spatula, White or this ISI Basics Slim Spatula. I've read all the reviews for each and a lot of people seemed to like the Vitamix spatula. So I bought all three.

Up front, the Vitamix spatula was absolutely the least quality and worse performing spatula of the bunch. It's hard plastic, not pliable and did a terrible job at conforming to the sides of the Vitamix when scraping material out of it. Plus, the hard plastic is easily nicked by the Vitamix blades. So I regretted buying the Vitamix spatulas.

This ISI Basics spatula is great. It's 10 3/4" long in total length which is long enough to reach to the bottom of the Vitamix. It has a spring steel core covered with silicone. That means it is BPA free, dishwasher safe and stiff. It does not easily bend as you are trying to scrape something out of the Vitamix, yet the edges of the spatula do give a little bit. The soft silicone edges of the spatula excel at scraping material off the inside of the Vitamix. And the edges of the spatula are thin which makes this useful for other things than just using in the Vitamix. The spatula actually has edges of different lengths. One side is 3 7/8" long while the other side is shorter, at 2 7/8".

Whereas the Vitamix is easily nicked by the blades of the Vitamix, I believe the softer silicone is more resilient. You still have to be careful around the blades, but compared to the Vitamix which is so easily nicked, this is not as easily nicked.

Of course, this spatula is also great for scraping every last little bit of peanut butter out of a jar, or mayonnaise, etc. It's also thin enough to use in around the edges of a baking pan. And because it is silicone, it can withstand temperatures up to 600 degrees.

This is great for using with the Vitamix. The OXO Jar Spatula is also good. I'd say it's a toss-up. I bought both and use them both. You can't go wrong with either one.

I can't explain the craziness that goes on in my kitchen, well my house, but items disappear on their own, even favorite items. This never happened before I got married (can you say crazy in-laws :-) ). So I have adjusted to this new way of life. Well, one day my slim rubbermaid spatula became the next victim of my free-gifts-house (as my grown identical twin nephews on my husband's side love to put it) for my in-laws. So I went a year or so without it, needing it a few times. Well I bought the "Cuisinart CBT-1000 PowerEdge 1.3 Horsepower Blender with 64-Ounce BPA Free Jar, Brushed Stainless" from Amazon too and started using it daily for morning protein drinks. The blades are extremely sharp and started tearing up my older spatulas. Spatulas with cuts? Can you say microbial zones? So when I was buying some new, replacement spatulas, I stumbled across this one and bought it too thinking, I've been needing that slim spatula and it might not get so torn up in that blender.

Much to my delight, it is perfect for scraping the bottom of the blender and is not getting torn up at all because it fits in between the blades when its square edge is up against the inside wall of the blender. I sweep half way around one way, return the spatula to center keeping the square part against the bottom and inside wall of the blender and sweep the other way and I am done! I used to struggle scrapping over and over again while trying not to get them sliced when using all the other spatulas.

And this thing helps scrape out jars and containers like nobody's business. Anything to speed up my tasks so I can get some me time, is a good thing.

Because I make shakes daily, I bought 5 more (buffers since I have the free-gifts-house :-) ) and since our dishwasher runs once every 3-5 days.

All around great spatula and a must buy if you are in the spatula market!

Awesome spatula for vitamix and general kitchen use. Purchased specifically for the vitamix but have been using in my kitchen for other cooking needs. It’s a nice balance of flexible and sturdy so it works easily and is small enough to maneuver around tighter corners. Very easy to clean due to the silicone surface and easy to hold.

This is by far the best set of bowl scrapers / spatulas that we've ever purchased and it seems silly to go into this much detail over them but they really are that good. They have some sort of metal frame under the silicon that helps it keep its shape even when working with stiff dough or batter but have a short side and long side that make scraping batter, dough, liquids, etc off the sides of a bowl a breeze. They withstand even the highest heat on the stove and besides our every day utensils (fork, knives, spoons) these are the MOST used kitchen tool we own - period. I make a lot of bread and use 2 of these together instead of a dough wisk to do the pre-knead mixing, then rinse them off to scramble eggs, then turn around and use them to help wash / scrape the pan. Talk about a multi-tasking kitchen tool. The 3 that i purchased last Jan have begun to show wear along the neck and some of the silicon has begun to crack and break off but this is a testament to how well they're made considering the shear amount of abuse they've taken over the previous 12 months. Although not indestructible, they're seriously the best scratch-proof and heat-resistant kitchen utensil you'll find on the market today.

Best spatula I've ever used, hands down. Molds itself to sides and bottom of bowl or whatever you are scraping. Easy to grip and maneuver. Holding up very well, still like new after months of use. Doesn't get stiff, sticky, stained, or cracked over time like the rubbermaid type ones do. Would buy again in a minute.

This is great for getting to the bottom of jars and suchlike. The silicone is the right amount of flexible, and the handle has the right amount of strength. I bought it to replace one that had a wooden handle with a silicone blade, and they separated. I am sure this one will not.
