When I unpacked these bowls, I was delighted and surprised by how heavy and sturdy these bowls are! They're the perfect variety of sizes for mixing bowls - the largest is good for mixing bread dough, making popcorn, or mixing batches of messy, sticky things that are difficult to mix. The smallest is a great size for beating plenty of eggs for a family breakfast. The in-betweens are great for mixing up batters.
Here are the measurements of the bowls, with the inner diameter (ID) measured at the lip of the bowl, and the depth measured near the center:
3 qt: 8.25" ID, 3.75" Deep, 11.35 oz
5 qt: 9.5" ID, 4.5" Deep, 1 lb 1.4 oz
8 qt: 11" ID, 5.25" Deep, 1 lb 6.1 oz
13 qt: 14" ID, 6" Deep, 2 lbs 1.75 oz
As you can see, the bowls are quite heavy. This is nice because you don't have to worry about heavy utensils tipping them over, and they don't dent or warp easily. Only time I've had one change shape in any way is with the largest bowl, when it was filled with stock, the bottom of the bowl "popped" outward (the bottoms are slightly convex with respect to the inside) when lifted. When I set it back down on the counter, it popped back in, and after the bowl was emptied and cleaned it had it's normal shape and didn't seem to suffer any damage. I think this is because the largest bowl is somewhat shallow and wide compared to the others.
Only problem with the heavy bowls would be if you have a kitchen scale with a low weight limit - many are limited to 5 lbs. If you have a scale like that, and tried to measure some food in one of these bowls, you would lose a great deal of your measuring capability due to the weight of the bowl.
Overall, for what I do in my kitchen, these bowls are wonderful - sturdy, heavy, versatile, and this set has a good variety of sizes. If you need a good set of mixing bowls and have the space to store the largest one, this is a great set.

UPDATE 09/2013 - Three years later, these are still great, use them all the time! Only noticeable wear is some faint scratching on the inside bottom of the bowl, nothing major. Great purchase, very durable!

Wow! Very heavy, sturdy bowls.
These bowls are very heavy duty. The variety of sizes is useful. I uploaded some images to help show the sizes better. I am very happy with the quality and value. Only complaint is the stupid bar code sticker on the bottom of each bowl... it must be stuck on with industrial strength glue. Trying to peel it off by hand just leaves a sticky residue. Why do they do that?!?
