Real Cocktails: Classic and Contemporary Drinks for the Real Foodie Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

Sleek, Sophisticated, and perhaps even Healthy?

One week we hear of studies championing the health benefits of alcohol consumption. The next week we hear the opposite. What if the “mixed” reviews on the health attributes of alcohol had more to do with the peculiar ingredients, additives, chemicals, and artificial colors and flavors than the alcohol itself? What if a relaxing drink made at home with fresh, wholesome ingredients really could be an enjoyable and healthful treat to add to your evening routine?

Convenience Turned Clueless

Convenience has become a huge problem in modern life, and alcoholic beverages haven’t been spared this double-edged trend. With stacks of pre-made drink mixes available to the general public and bartenders alike, we’ve gotten all-too-comfortable and conditioned to sub-standard mixed drinks. It’s also left many of us clueless on how to make our own outstanding drinks from scratch, regarding those who know the art of mixing drinks as special sorcerers privy to secrets unobtainable to laypersons.

It’s Time to Bring Back the Lost Art

For your education, for your health, and for you dignity—Real Cocktails brings you a beautiful, colorful manual on making your own simple, refreshing, perky drinks at home—using only the freshest ingredients, traditional ferments, and high quality liqueurs. In this book, you’ll learn everything you know to become a real cocktail dynamo: • How to make the basic six cocktails better than anyone you know, with a twinkle in your eye • How to make your own aromatic bitters, enlivening your drinks and giving them special properties that can awaken your digestion and more • How to use healthy, traditional fermented beverages like water kefir in your drinks • How to make your own cocktail garnishes, from martini olives to maraschino cherries that don’t glow in the dark (yikes) • How to create mixers made from fresh fruit juice and natural sweeteners • Basic drink terminology for equipment and mixed cocktails, old school and new • And more

Buy Real Cocktails now, and bring sexy and sophisticated back to your glass. Life is too short to drink mysterious glowing swill labeled as “Margarita Mix” and other concoctions more suitable for a Slurpee machine.

It was October 2008 when I found out. My son was going to be born with a cleft lip and palate. More tests, more abnormalities, and I was filled with questions. How would I feed him? What had I done to cause this? And the question every mother asks: Was he going to be okay?

I decided right then and there, that I was going to take better care of myself and whole family from that moment forward. And so began my search for optimal nutrition. I was determined to find the best way to get myself healthy, but without falling prey to the latest fad diet. I found what I was looking for: real food.

Real food is whole, traditional, completely clean food: egg yolks, butter, vegetables from farmer’s markets, raw milk, and even organ meats like liver! My son couldn’t get enough butter or cod liver oil the first two years of his life, and he has the healthy immune system to prove it. What I changed in our diets has worked. We are truly nourished.

I’m Kendahl Florio, the founder of Our Nourishing Roots, where over years of reading and research I share my nutritional wisdom, from yogurt tutorials to making the perfect martini with homemade bitters.

You can stay current with me on http://ournourishingroots.com by signing up for my free newsletter, leaving a comment, and trying out my recipe for the best brownies evar. Yep, I said it: they really are the best. You can also see all my books available only on Amazon.

This is a fabulous book! It isn't just how to mix this cocktail or that cocktail, but how to make many of the components of those cocktails with real food ingredients. I especially appreciate that when using honey, the author notes to only heat enough to dissolve the honey. This is important because it protects raw honey from pasteurization. Also included are recipes that aren't exclusive to cocktails like maraschino cherries, Worcestershire sauce, sweetened condensed milk, and similar things I've wanted to make myself but didn't know how. My son is excited to try some of the water kefir "soda" recipes. There were a few herbs/spices I'd never heard of like quassia bark, which might be hard to track down at a local grocery store, but they were easy enough to get through my favorite online herb shop.

Congratulations to the author. This book entertained and excited me from the first few words. I love Kendahl's obviously cheeky (wicked?) sense of humour, her passion for the good life and her focus on healthy, real foods. I hope she has an open-door policy - I would seriously love to be on her guest list whenever she entertains. Buy the book - even if you don't drink. I don't, but I'm seriously re-considering that! In case you haven't noticed, I loved the book! BTW - heaps of information. You can't go wrong!

I don't drink, but even a teetotaler like me found lots of good stuff in this recipe book. I don't think I've ever had a more delectable shortbread. And the eggnog--I didn't know eggnog could taste like that!

Surprisingly thorough cocktail book focusing on qualtiy, real food igredients, including home made bitters, water kefir in place of tonic and soda, and home fermented olives, pickles, limes and more. Recipes are on par with what you will find in most cocktail compendiums, great info on how to choose your liquor. Great book that made me thirsty.

Nice to know you can make your types of drinks. Plus make your own recipes. To the tasty flavored drinks.

Interesting. Will appeal to those that like cooking from scratch and that do not want artificial ingredients in their food or drink. The recipes didn't sound that difficult with ingredients not impossible to find. There are many I plan to try.
