Marcigny, a small town nestled between the hills of Southern Burgundy, has been home to Emile Henry for the past 150 years. Faithful to its origins, the entire production is carried out here. Thanks to its clay, rich in refractory properties, Burgundy has remained a fertile area for potters, passing on their savoir-faire from generation to generation. Clay, a natural and noble material, has been used since the mists of the time to cook or preserve food. While respecting the traditional techniques, Emile Henry has introduced technological improvements (Ceradon ) so that the dishes are more resistant to mechanical and thermal shock. Strong and durable, all Emile Henry pieces can be taken directly from the freezer to a hot oven, can go under a broiler and are microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe. The natural clay is unsurpassed for conducting and retaining heat. All pieces are perfect for everyday use and carry a 3 year warranty against defects.

I mainly chose this butter crock because of the yellow color, but I have been extremely pleased with the size & capacity. It holds just about 2 sticks of butter & always keeps the butter at the perfect temperature for easy spreading. The design of the crock keeps the butter from sliding out, as seems to be a problem with other crocks & it looks fabulous sitting out on my counter! I'm very pleased with this crock, not only for the color, but also for the way it serves a purpose and fills a need. I would definitely recommend this to others.
I wasn't able to see this at a store before I purchased it on Amazon, but I was hoping it would be a color that would match a Fiestaware color. I thought it might be close to Sunflower, but I was thrilled to see that it's an almost perfect match to Marigold-a beautiful orangey/gold. I like that it's made in France, not China, and it's slightly bigger than other crocks. It fits about half a pound of butter (2 sticks). It's perfect for the fresh hunks of butter at the farmers' market. I've only had it a day, but I'm very happy with it so far.
I'd rate this 5 stars except for the fact that the opening of the butter cavity is narrower than the cavity itself which makes it a little more difficult to get the last of the butter out. This is a very minor inconvenience. The good parts about it are that the "lid" sits flat on the table and has no tendency to tip over as some others would. That does make it a little less comfortable in the hand - less to hold on to than another like the "Butter Bell." I have both and like them both. The Emile Henry is a little more classy in design, and it holds more than the 1 1/2 stick of butter as advertised. It holds about 1 3/4 or maybe a little more. As to the comments about butter coming loose and floating in the water, I've found this only happened when I hadn't learned to pack the butter in good and tight with no air pockets. After doing it once or twice, I never saw this problem again in either this one or my "Butter Bell." Works great for me.
Just got this yesterday and I LOVE IT! It's such a pretty color (think marigold yellow) and has inspired me to consider a kitchen in this color and light gray. Anyway, the product is well made and very easy to use. I packed it with butter, it fit 2 sticks, as promised. Although I use the Kerrygold Irish butter which comes in a large 8 oz blocks (equal to 2 stick) and the entire block fit perfectly when packed in tightly. With the water seal, it is keeping it fresh while not having to deal with hard butter. I have not had any butter fall out at all. I'm so happy I purchased this butter pot and am now looking to see if Emile Henry makes any other products I need.
